10 wellness challenge ideas for friends and family

The best wellness challenges for friends and family are short, specific and easy to track: 200,000 steps as a team in two weeks, 7.5 hours of sleep a night for a week, or checking in every day for seven days. Pick one that matches what your group wants more of, and run it for 7 to 14 days.

Every idea below includes a goal and a length that have worked for small groups. Swap the numbers to suit your people; the structure is what makes them stick.

Movement challenges for friends and family

Movement challenges are the easiest to start because phones already count steps.

  1. Family 200k steps. A team goal over 14 days. Everyone’s steps add up, so it suits mixed ages.
  2. Gym buddies. 600 workout minutes as a team over 14 days. Runs, classes, swims and yoga all count.
  3. Active 30. Thirty active minutes every day for 7 days, each person on their own goal. Brisk walks count.

Sleep challenges that people actually finish

Sleep challenges work best as individual goals with group support, because nobody can sleep for someone else.

  1. Early to bed week. Average 7.5 hours of sleep a night for 7 days. The nudge “Go to bed” becomes part of the game.
  2. Same bedtime Sunday to Thursday. Everyone picks their own target bedtime and tries to land within 45 minutes of it on school or work nights.

Mind and mood challenges

These are quieter, which is exactly why doing them with others helps.

  1. Mindful March, or any month. 150 mindful minutes over 30 days, about five minutes a day of breathing or sitting.
  2. Check in every day. Seven check-ins in seven days. It takes five seconds, and it gives your circle a real sense of how everyone is.
  3. Breathe before bed. Three minutes of box breathing or 4-7-8 breathing each night for a week.

Connection challenges

Some of the best challenges are about looking after each other.

  1. Balanced week. Aim for an average rhythm score of 70 across 7 days. You cannot get there on steps alone, so it rewards sleep, breathing and the small things you do for others.
  2. One kind nudge a day. Send one person in your circle a “Proud of you”, “Thinking of you” or “How are you?” each day for a week.

How to pick the right wellness challenge for your group

Ask everyone what they want more of, and pick the challenge most people named. Keep the first one short: seven days builds momentum, and a second challenge is an easy yes after a first one that felt good.

Use a team goal when fitness levels differ, and a race only when everyone enjoys competing. Small prizes are optional; a shared walk or dinner at the end usually matters more.

Questions

How long should a wellness challenge last?

Seven to fourteen days works best for a first challenge. Thirty day challenges suit small daily habits like a few mindful minutes, and are easier after a shorter one has gone well.

Should wellness challenges with friends have prizes?

They do not need them. A shared finish, like a walk or a meal together, keeps the focus on the habit. If you do add a prize, keep it small so nobody feels pressure to push through an injury or a bad night.
